My invention relates to the class of locks above named, and an object of my invention, among others, is the simple construction of a lock of this type that shall be provided with means to prevent opening withoutV the use of a key.
One form of a lock embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a lock embodying my invention.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 10 denotes the case of `my improved lock, that may be of the shape of locks generally of this type, said case having a well p for the long arm 11 of a shackle that is seated upon a spring 12 in the bottom of said well. The case has a key plug 13 of ordinary construction which contains tumblers cooperating with tumblers 14 located in the case 'and operating in a. manner common to locks of this type. The short arm 15 of the shackle has a notch for engagement by the nose of a locking bolt 16.
All the parts thus far described, except as to the locking bolt, are of old and well known A of the short arm 15 of the shackle.

The locking bolt 16 has a locking recess 17 in its under surface into which a lock-ing stud 18 projects from the plug 13, this recess being of such size that the stud .prevents backward movement of lthe bolt and retains it in its locked position. A releasing recess 19 opens from the locking recess, this releasing recess being deeper `on one side :than on the other, as vshown in Figure 7 of the drawings, thereby presenting a locking'shoulder 2O abutting the stud 18 when the parts arel in their locked positions and therefore preventing backward or unlocking movement of the unlocking bolt, and which unlocking movement can be accomplished only by rotating the key plug 18 by use lof a key in the ordinary manner.
It will thus be seen vthat when the parts are in their locked positions the locking bolt 16 can be released from the shackle lonly' by the use of a key, and it will therefore be impossible to surreptitiously unlock the mechanism as by means of blows delivered u on the lock case, which operation has hereto ore been 'found to be successful in the hands of a skillful manipulator.
In order to permit free backward movement of the locking bolt and thereby permit the parts to be automatically locked when the shackle is pushed inwardly, the nose 'of the bolt is formed with a releasing cam 21 on its end adapted to receive a cam Q2 on the end When the parts are in the position shown in Figure 2 and it is desired to lock the mechanism the shackle is pushed. inwardly and the engagement of the cams 21and 22 will cause the bolt 16 to be rocked out of the position shown in Figure 7 and to the position shown in Figure 3, in which position the stud 18 lies entirely lbelow the locking shoulder 20, andthe bolt 16 may therefore freely move backward to permit full movement of the shackle inwardly. Vhen the latter has reached its inward position the spring 23 will force the bolt to its closed position, and the enga-gement of the flat side of the notch in the arm 15 with the fiat side of the nose of the bolt will cause the latter y to rotated into the position shown in Figure 7, in which position backward movement of the bolt 16 can be attained only by the use of a key.
In accordance With the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operat-ion of my invention, together With the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I' desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other` than those above set out.
I claim- 1. A padlock including a case, a shackle movably: mounted Within the case, a locking bolt rotatably mounted in the .case and longitudinally movable for engagement with said shackle, said bolt having a recess cut away on lone side, a key plug movably mounted in the casefand a stud projecting from said key plug into said recess to prevent backward movement of the locking bolt independently of the plugin one position of said bolt butto permit such movement when the cut away portion of the Arecess-is opposite said stud.

A padlock including a case, a shackle mo Vably mounted Within the case, a locking bolt rotatably mounted in the case and longitudinally movable forengagement with said shackle, said bolt having a recess forming 'a shoulder, a key plug rotatably mounted in said case, yal stud projecting from said plug into said recess, and means. for rotating said bolt to pass said shoulder from a position opposite said stud.
3. A padlock including a case, la shackle movably mounted Within the case, a locking bolt rotatably mounted in the case and longitudinally movable for engagement with said shackle, said bolt having a recess forming a shoulder, a plug movably mounted in the case, a stud projecting from said plug, and means on the shackle and bolt for rotating the latter to remove said shoulder from a position opposite said stud. t
4. A' padlock including a case, a shackle movably mounted in the case and having a recess With a flat side, a locking bolt rotatably mounted in the case and longitudinally movable for engagement With said shackle. said bolt lhaving a nose With a flat side to engage the flat' 'side of said recess, a key plug movably mounted' in the case, a stud projecting from said plug into a recess With a shoulder in said locking holt, and means for rotating said bolt 'to locate said shoulder in a position to permit longitudinal movement of said bolt Without interference by said stud.

A padlock including a case, a shackle movably mounted Within the case and having a cam surface on one end thereof, a locking bolt rotatably mounted in the case and longitudinally movable for engagement With said shackle, said bolt having a cam surface to from when the bolt is rotated by the action of said cam surfaces.
