Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED LAWRENCE, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE 8L TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PADLOCK.
Application led July 9, 1923. Serial No. 650,462.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that IALFRED LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, and resident oi' Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locks and more particularly to pad-locks of the pin tumbler type,-an object of the -invention being to provide simple and eilicient deadlocking means to prevent the lock from being rapped or jarred open.
IVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsr- Figure 1 is a side elevation (with the casing in section) of a padlock in which my improvements are embodied.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, with the shackle and cylinder plug in elevation.
Figures 3 and e are transverse sectional views.
Figure 5 is a separate view of the lock plug, and
Figure ythe locking bler.
In the dra-wings, I have shown a casing 1 for a padlock and a shackle 2 having its longer arm suitably guided in the casing and provided with a bolt-receiving notch 3 and its shorter arm 4C adapted to enter the casing and having a bolt-receiving notch 5i.
A pin tumbler lock 6 is suitably secured within the casing 1 and the plug 7 of this lock is provided at its inner end with a flange 8 having a notched or cut-away portion 9 and a pin 10 adjacent thereto,-said plug being also recessed at 11. The flange l8 is intended to impart movement to the locking bolts of the device and the notched and recessed portions will accommodate or provide clearance for a deadlocking tumbler carried by one of said bolts, as presently explained.
Two bolts 12e-13 are suitably mounted to slide over the pin tumbler lock and are normally pressed in opposite directions so 6 is a perspective view showing bolt and the deadlocking tumas to engage in the bolt-receiving notches 3 and 5 of the shackle, by means of springs 1li-14: interposed between said bolts. The respective bolts 12 and 13 are provided with depending lugs 15-15 which lie in parallel planes and so spaced apart as to receive the plug flange 8 between them. It is apparent that when the plug is turned with the use of a suitable key, the bolts 12-13 will be moved in opposite directions and retracted from the bolt-receiving notches of the shackle.
A deadlocking ,tumbler 16 is pivotally connected with the underside of one of the bolts,-in the present instance, the bolt 13. One end of this deadlocking tumbler is caused, by the action of a spring 17 to engage or be disposed in the path of the .lug 15 on the bolt 12 and thus the bolts will be deadlocked and prevented from being retracted by rapping or jarring the padlock. The deadlocking tumbler 16 is provided at one edge with a depending lug 18 which is disposed in the path of movement of the pin`10 at the inner end of the lock plug 7, so that when said plug is turned during the manipulation of the lock by means of a suitable key, the pin 10, engaging the lug 18, will cause the deadlocking tumbler to move out of engagement or alignment with the lug 15 on the bolt 12 and therefore the retracting of the bolts 12-13 by the plug of the lock will be permitted.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with the casing and shackle of a pad-lock, a lock of the pintumbler type and a bolt operable by the plug of said lock and cooperable with the shackle of the pad-lock, of a dead-locking tumbler carried by said bolt.
2. The combination with a lock of the pin tumbler type and two bolts mounted to slide and operable by the plug of said lock, of a deadlocking tumbler carried by one of said bolts and cooperable with the other bolt.
3. The combination with a padlock of the pin tumbler type, a shackle and sliding bolts cooperable with said shackle and operable by the plug of the lock, of a springpressed deadlocking tumbler carried by one of said bolts and cooperable with the other bolt, and a part on the plug of the lock to moveJ said deadlocking tumblenout of cooperative relation with one ,of said bolts.
et. The combination with a padlock of the pin tumbler type and including a shackle and spring-pressed sliding bolts to engage said shackle7 said bolts having lugs to receive a part on the plug of the lockbe-l tween them, of a spring-pressed deadlocking tumbler carried bylone ofsaidbo-lts and cooperable With the lug on the other bolt ,tolxleacllock both of`V sadbolts, said deadlocking tumbler having a projection, and
a part on theplug ofI the. lock to engage the lug-on thegleadlocking tumbler to move the latter out of cooperative relation to the lug on one of saiclbolts Whenthe plug is turned.
v In testimony whereo I have signed this specification in the presence of two sub- Scribing Witnesses.
