Description

June 23, 1925. 1,543,397 I c. S /SCHROEDER PADLOCK Filed July 29, 1924 Patented June 23, 1925.

UNITED STATES 1,543,397 PATENT OFFICE.

CHARLES S. SCHROEDER, 0F STAMFGRD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE 8c TOWNE MANUFACTURING GQIVIEANY,'0F STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.

PAD LO CK.

Application filed July 29, 1924. SerialNo. 728,903.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, Grmnnns S. Sermonnna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State 01 Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7

This invention relates to improvements in padlocks and more particularly to those of the sliding shackle ratchet lock type,-one object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means to deadlock one or the other of the bolts which engage the shackle legs, in the event that attempt be made to open the padlock by picking or rapping. V

lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction andcombination of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings,-

Figure 1 is a view in elevation with the casing shown in section, illustrating an em,- bodiment or" the invention.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view with certain parts omitted;

Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.

Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 showing the casing parts.

Figure 8 is a View on the line 8 8 of Figure 5. i I

Figures 9 and 10 are detail views of the bolt. Y

Figure 11 shows the dead-locking device.

Figures 12 and 13 are enlarged views illustrating the operation of the dead-locking device, and

Figures 1 1- and 15 are views illustrating a modified construction.

The casing of the lock may comprise two members 12 secured together by bolts or rivets as indicated at i, and the companion parts of the casing are formed with passageways 5 for the accommodation of the legs 66 of a shackle 7. The shackle legs are toothed on their inner faces as indicated are detail views at 8 to receive the toothed end portions 9 which are mounted horizontally in guides 13 in the casing members and are movable longitudinally into or out of locking engagement with the ratchet teeth of the shackle legs. The boltsare disposed side by side and so formed as to provide an elongated pocket 14 having seats 15 in the respective bolts at respective ends of said pocket to receive the-respective ends of a spring 16 located in the pocket,one end of said spring engaging in a seat 15 formed in one of the bolts and the other end-of said spring en gaging in a seat 15 in the other bolt, so that the bolts will be normally projected in opposite directions to engage the respective toothed legs of the shackle. 1 7

The bolt 11 is provided on its lower edge with a laterally projecting finger 17 and the 'bolt 12 is provided on its upper edge with a linger 18 which projects laterally in the same direction as does the finger 17. A cam lever 19 is pivotally mounted on a pintle 20 carried by one of the casing members and said lever is adapted to engage the bolt fingers 17 and 18 respectively below and bolt) which is at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the bolt and near the other end of the latter, a beveled shoulder 26 is provided. A right angle shoulder 27 is formed near the toothed end and upper edge oi'the bolt 12 and near the opposite end of this bolt, a beveled shoulder 28 is formed. Normally, the beveled shoulder of one bolt will be in proximity to the right angle shoulder of the other. bolt, as shown in Figure 12.

j A, dead-locking device 29 is provided and in the embodiment of the invent on shown in Figures 1 and 11, this device may consist ofa single piece of spring metal bent tolform a loop 30, the lowerarms of which terminate in spring fingers 31 having lat eral projections 32 which normally rest on the respective bolts at the upper ends of the inclined shoulders 2628 of the bolts as illustrated in Figures 1 and 12, and the intermediate "portion of this device is provided with an upward projection which enters recesses 34: in the upper portions of the companion members of the casing.

Should attempt be made to open the lock by picking or rapping, one of the bolts will generally move before the other. As the bolts stand in their normal position, as in Figure 12, the beveled shoulder of one bolt is opposite the right angle or square shoulder of the other bolt, thereby preventing the fingers of the dead-locking device from dropping behind the shoulder or 27, but should one of the bolts be moved in an attempt to open the lock by picking or rapping, one of the fingers of the dead locking device will be permitted todrop behind the right angle or square shoulder of the other bolt and thus deadlock the same.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the cam lever is located to one side of the pair of bolts and the fingers on the bolt engaged by said lever project in the same direction from the respective bolts. In the arrangement shown in Figures 14 and 15', however, a cam lever is pivotally supported between the belts 36 37, by a pin 3 projecting from the casing, said bolts being slotted as at 3 for the accommodation of said pin. Fingers 38 39 project in opposite directions from the respective bolts, to be engaged by the cam lever 35, and the belts may be pro jected by springs 40, 40. In this form of the invention, the spring arms or fingers n, 4-2 of a dead-locking device 43 are notched where they cross so that the ends of saic arms or fingers will eiigage the respective bolts and the lateral projections such. as shown at 32 Figure 11 omitted. The modified dead-locking device as will 3e attachedcentrally to the casing.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is;

1'. In a padlock, the combination with a casing and a shackle, of relatively movable bolts to engage the shackle legs, yielding dead-loeking means to engage said bolts, each of said bolts having means normally holding said dead-locking means out of dead-locking relatioii to the bolts but per mitting' said dead-locking means to move iiito dead-locking relation to one bolt when the other bolt is moved out of locking relation with one of the shackle legs by surreptitious attempt to open the lock.

2. In a padlock, the combination with casing and a shackle having toothed legs, oi relatively movable toothed bolts to eh the shackle legs, yielding dead-locking means to engage said bolts, each of said bolts having means normally holding said dead locking means out of deaddoeking relation to the bolts'but permitting said dead locking means to move into dead locking relation to one bolt when the other bolt moved out of locking relation with one of the shackle legs by surreptitious attempt to open the lock.

3. In a padlock, the combination with a casing and a shackle, of two relatively morable spring pressed bolts to engage the respectivelegs of the shackle, each bolt having a square shoulder near one end and an inclined shoulder near the other end, the inclined shoulder of one bolt bei .g adjacent to the square shoulder of the other bolt, and yielding dead-locking means normally held out of dead-locking relation to the bolts by the inclined shouldered portions thereof. v

4. In a padlock, the combination with a casing and shackle, of two relatively movable spring pressed bolts to engage the re spective legs of the shackle, each bolt having a square shoulder near one end and an inclined shoulder near the other end, the inclined shoulder of one bolt being adjacent to the square shoulder of the other bolt, and dead 'locking means for said bolts comprising spring fingers attached to the casing and normally engaging said bolts near the upper ends of the inclined shoulders thereof,

5. In a padlock, the combination witha and a shackle, of two relatively movable spring pressed bolts to engage the respective legs of the shackle, each bolt having a square shoulder near one end and an inclined shoulder near the other end, the inclined shotilder of one bolt being adja cent to the square shoulder of the other bolt, and a dead-locking device comprising in a single piece, two oppositely disposed spring fingers normally engaging the bolts near the upper ends of the inclined shoulders thereof.

6. In a padlock, thecombination with a casing and a shackle having toothed legs, of two toothed bolts, spriiig means for proj'e'ct'ing' said bolts int'o' locking engagement with the shackle legs, a cam lever cooperzible with both of said bolts to retract them simultaneously, means for operating said cam lever, deaddediing means for deadlocking one or the other of said bolts should surreptitieus attempt be made to open the lock, and means operable to normally hold the dead-lockiiig means out of deadlocking relation to the bolts.

In testimony whereohl have signed this speei'tication in the presence of two subscribiiig witnesses.
