a segment of the inner edgeof thering 3t fora purpose which willlater be morefullyapparent.
The numerals '34 and =36 represent a pair of carriers or. bifurcated slide members that are slidablyreceived ineradial recesses 3"! in the inner face of the wall l2. Thesemembers 34 and-3x": are provided with longitudinal. slots 33 that slid- .The members 34 and .36each includebearingsurfaces tfl that abut the bearing surfaces 2 2 of 1 theholding tmembers i 6 .and -.I8, and the- holding members 46 and 58 are held fixed to the furcations of the members 3 3 and 36 by pins 4|.
Fixed to the lower portions 42 of the wedge members 34 and 36, are guide pins 43 that are slidably received in tangential guide slots or openings 44 formed in the ring 30. So that as the ring 30 is rotated, the members 34 and 36 will move radially toward or away from each other, depending of course whether the ring is rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise, to urge the holding members into or out of a locked position.
Rotatably carried by the casing I0 is a known and conventional key barrel 46 having a key receiving opening 48 that opposes a suitable opening in the casing l0. Fixed to the innermost end of the barrel 46 is an annular, toothed gear 50 that engages the toothed portion 32 of the ring 30.
Fixed to and projecting outwardly from the closure plate I2 is a plurality of cireumferentially spaced lugs 52 that space the closure plate from a supporting structure and which also guard the exposed channel shaped end portion 54 of a substantially U-shaped attaching member 56 that is positioned in the casing I and which is locked within the casing It by the teeth 26 and 28 of the holding members l6 and I8.
It should be noted, that the end portions 54 of the member 56 are adapted to be received in an elongated slot 53 at one end 51 of a hinge to yieldingly embrace the transverse edges of the slot and retain the present locking mechanism relative thereto so that a hinge hasp staple 58 may extend through the slot 53 provided in the end of the hinge on which the present locking mechanism is applied to be locked thereto.
In practical use of the present invention, when the proper key is inserted into the opening 48 the gear 58 and barrel 46 may be rotated to rotate or actuate the ring 3t and thus slide the members 34 and 36 toward each other and the jaws l6 and 68 into locking engagement with a suitable element such as a link or the like Gil.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

4. A look comprising a casing including an inner wall, a rotatable key receiving barrel carried by the casing, a plurality of toothed holding members mounted in the casing, an attaching member in engagement with the inner wall and having portions projecting outwardly from the inner wall and adapted to engage a structural element, a pair of slidable carriers supporting the holding members, said holding members being movable with the carriers toward each other to grip a hinge hasp staple, an internally toothed ring gear, an annular, toothed gear carried by the barrel for rotating the ring gear, means connecting the ring gear to the carriers for imparting a radial movement to the latter as the former is rotated, and means for spacing the casing relative to a supporting structural element and for guarding the attaching member.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said last mentioned means includes a plurality of circumierentially spaced lugs carried by the casing.
6. A look comprising a casing, a rotatable key receiving barrel carried by the casing, a plurality of slidable holding members mounted within the casing, a pair of slidable carriers supporting the holding members, an internally toothed ring gear rotatable within the casing, an annular gear carried by said barrel and engaging the teeth of said ring gear, and interconnecting means between said ring gear and said carriers for movement of the carriers radially upon rotation of said ring gear.
