Referring now to the drawings, the lock desirably comprises asu'bstantially cup-shaped casing 11 of suitable "metal which has a substantially rectangular block 12 preferably integral therewith and positioned in the in- 'teriorof the casing. The block 12, which extends from side wall 13 of the casing, desirably has a bore 14 therethrough which -eXtends through floor 15 of the casing 1 1 and through a hub 16 on the outer surface of floor 15, the outer end of said bore desirably having an inturned annular flange '17.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, block 12 desirably defines 'a 'pair'o f spaced parallel tracks 18 and 19 positioned between the adjacent sides of the block and the associated "side 'walls -21 of the casing. Slidably mounted in tracks 18 19 are the legs 22 and 23 of a substantially U-shaped yoke 24 which straddle said block. The yoke 24 desirably has a slot 25 extending from one edge 26 thereof to near the opposed edge thereof. To this end a cam member 38 is rotatably mounted on a plate 39 afiixed over the open mouth 41 or the casing to seal the latter. The c'am member 38 is desirably ,positione'd on the inner side of the plate and afiixed to the end of a spindle shaft 42 so as to rotate with the lat'ter. The cam member desirably has a pairof substantially-diametrically opposed arms 43 lying in the same plane, which may coact with upstanding fingers 44 and "45, desirably formed integral with the free ends of the legs of yoke 24. Thus, -upon rotation of the shaft 42 in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 3, one of the cam arms 43 will engage the associated finger 44 or 45 to move the yoke 24 inwardly against the tension of coil springs 33 to retract the latch "bolt head. p
Positioned in the bore 14 "of block 12 is a spindle shaft 48 desirably having a substantially rectangular portion 49 at one end thereof protruding from hub 16 of the casing. The other end of the spindle is substantially cylindrica'l, defining an annular shoulder 51 which serves as a stop for coil spring 52 positioned in bore 14 between said annular shoulder 51 and annular flange 17. The cylindrical portion of the spindle desirably has an annular groove 54 in which is positioned the free end of one of the legs 55 of a substantially 'L -'shaped latchmember 56. 'The cam member 38 rotatably mounted in cover plate '39 desirably has a plurality of spaced outstanding arcuate lugs 63 (Figs. 1., 4 and 6) which are designed to be positioned in the spaces between the adjacentlngs 59 at the end of spindle 43 so that spindles 42 "and 48 may rotate together. Positioned over the bore 61 {at the inner end of spindle 48 and encompassed by lugs 59 is the enlargedhead 66 of a pin 67, the latter desirably having a ca i y 68 extending therein through said enlarged head. Means are desirably provided to retain the looking member 56 in latched position so that lugs 59 and 63 which define a clutch will be out of engagement. To this end a substantially L-sha-ped lock arm :71 (Figs. 3 and *6) is pivotally mounted atone end as at 72 to plate-39. The
leg 73 of the lock arm desirably extends through a slot 74 in spindle 42on the inner side of plate 39 and is 'positioned between said plate and c'am member 38. The :free end of arm 73 is normally urged by means *of a leaf spring '75 so that it will be positioned. over "a shoulder 76 formed at the free "end of leg 57 of latch member 56, normally retaining the latter in retracted position against the urging of coil spring 52 against the'spin'dle 48. Thus, the latter will be retained in retracted position with the lugs 59 thereof out of engagement with the comple mentary lugs 63 of spindle 42 to release the clutch formed by lugs 59, 63.
By reason of the slot 74 in spindle 42, upon rotation 'of the latter in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, the cam edges 80 of said slot will abut against arm 73 to pivot arm 73 against the tension of leaf spring 75. Consequently, end 70 of arm 73 will be moved away from shoulder 76 so that the coil spring 52 may urge the spindle 48 outwardly from bore 14 for engagement of complementary clutch lugs 59 and 63.
With the construction thus far described, it is apparent 'that the latch bolt head 32 may be retracted at any time by the rotation of spindle 42 which directly drives cam arms 43 against fingers 44, 45 of yoke 24 and may be retracted by the rotation of spindle 48 only when latch member 56 has been released by. the movement of arm 73, whereby the engaged complementary clutch lugs 59 and 63 will prove a direct drive from spindle 48 to cam arms 43.
Means are desirably provided to release the latch member 56 from the outside of the door 79 to which the lock is aifixed so that clutch lugs 59, 63 will engage to permit retraction of latch bolt head 32. To this end a knob assembly 90 is provided comprising a conventional tumbler lock 81 positioned in the center of a hollow knob 82. The substantially cylindrical inner end 83 of the casing 84 of the tumbler lock 81 extends through a sleeve 85 which is afiixed in the inner end of knob 82 and protrudes therefrom and is keyed to said sleeve as at 86. The sleeve 85 extends through a central opening 87 in a circular face plate 88 which desirably has a circular depression or cavity 89 in the inner face thereof. The end 83 of casing 84 which also is in the form of a sleeve, desirably extends beyond sleeve 85 into depression 89 and through an opening 91 in a' spring retainer plate 92 which is keyed to sleeve 85 as at 93, the rim of end 83 being flanged outward to clamp plate 92 against sleeve 85 so that the plate 92 will rotate in depression 89 in plate 88 upon rotation of knob 82.
The spring retainer plate 92 desirably has a pair of diametrically opposed arms 95 extending to the inner wall of depression 89, each arm having lateral extending fingers 96. A pair of coil springs 97 ispositioned in the depression 89 in such manner that the ends thereof encompass a finger 96 on each of the arms 95 respectively, as shown in Fig. 5.
A cover plate 99 in the shape of a ring is positioned over the inner surface of circular face plate 88 with its periphery seated on an annular shoulder 101 encompassing depression 89. Cover plate 99 desirably has two diametrically opposed notches 102 in the periphery thereof through which extend respectively outstanding internally threaded cylindrical studs 103 formed integral with face plate 88 so as properly to position the plate 99 thereon. In addition, the cover plate 99 has two pairs of diametrically opposed inwardly extending stops 104 positioned midway between notches 102 which normally are aligned with the arms 95 of the spring retainer plate 92 and positioned between springs 97.
- The inner periphery of plate 99 desirably has an arcuate portion 106 thereof (Fig. of larger diameter than the remaining portion 107 to define a pair of stops 108 with which an upstanding finger 109 on spring retainer plate 92 coacts. Thus the rotation of the knob 82 is limited by the coaction of finger 109 with stops 108, the tensed coil springs 97 returning the plate 92 so that the finger 109 is midway between the stops 108 thereby positioning the keyhole 110 in the tumbler lock in vertical position for ready access.
The knob assembly 90 is rigidly affixed to the casing 11 by means of screws 112 (Fig. 2) positioned in sockets 113 on said casing 11 and threaded into the hollow studs 103 in plate 88. the studs entering one end of the respective sockets 113 as shown in Fig. 2.
When the face plate 88 is affixed to the casing 11 by screws 112, the rectangular portion 49 of spindle 48 will extend into a substantially rectangular sleeve 115 rigidly afiixed in the cylindrical end 83 of tumbler casing 84 so that the spindle 48 will rotate with knob 82. Desirably, a rosette 111 is positioned over the face plate 88 to conceal the latter for enhanced decorative effect.
The tumbler lock 81 desirably has a conventional tongue 116 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 which may be rotated only when a key is inserted into the keyhole 110. The tongue 116 is pivotally mounted at one end as at 120 and extends through rectangular bore 61 of the hollow spindle 48 with the free end 117 of said tongue being positioned in the cavity 68 of pin 67. The tongue desirably has a laterally protruding cam surface 118 along one edge, adjacent the free end 117 thereof, which, upon rotation of the tumbler lock, will ride against arcuate cam 62 to effect lateral movement of the free end of the tongue. Thus, upon rotation of the tongue, when a key is inserted in the tumbler lock and turned, the pin 67 will be moved in an eccentric path to abut against the latch arm 71 positioned in the slot 74 in spindle 42, thereby pivoting the latch arm on its pivot 72 to move the free end of said latch arm away from the shoulder 76 of latch member 56. As a result, the latch member 56 will be released so that spindle 48 will be moved under the urging of compressed coil spring 52 for engagement of complementary clutch lugs 59 and 63. Consequently upon rotation of knob 82 the engaged lugs 59 and 63 will provide a direct drive to cam member 38 for retraction of the latch bolt head to permit opening of the door to which the lock is applied.
Means are desirably provided to disengage the complementary clutch lugs 59 and 63 and to retain said lugs in disengaged position so that the latch bolt head 32 will not be retracted upon rotation of spindle 48 by knob 82.
To this end a knob assembly is provided which, as shown in Fig. 1, desirably comprises a conventional knob 126 similar in shape to knob 82 and having a central opening 127 therein with an inturned annular rim 128. Positioned in opening 127 is a substantially cup-shaped pushbutton 129 desirably having an out-turned annular flange 131 positioned on the inner side of rim 128 to retain the pushbutton in the knob 126. A hub 132 is positioned in knob 126 and desirably has a socket portion 133 at one end which encompasses the inturned rim 128. Positioned in socket portion 133 is a coil spring 134 compressed between the floor 135 of the socket and the inner surface of the pushbutton 129 thereby normally urging said pushbutton outwardly, limited by the engagement of annular flange 131 with rim 128.
The inner end of hub 132 desirably has a sleeve portion 136 of reduced diameter defining an annular shoulder 137, said sleeve portion extending through an axial opening 138 in a substantially circular face plate 139 and being flared outwardly as at 141 so that said hub 132 and the knob 126 aifixed to and encompassing the latter may rotate freely in said plate 139 but being retained from outward displacement therefrom.
The hub 132 desirably has a longitudinal bore 142 therethrough substantially cylindrical in cross section at its outer end as at 143 and rectangular in cross section at its mid section as at 144. Extending through said bore 142 is a substantially rectangular spindle or push rod which coacts with the rectangular portion 144 so that it will be turned upon rotation of knob 82. One end of the spindle rod 145 normally abuts against pushbutton 129 so that upon inward movement of said pushbutton, the spindle will also be correspondingly moved.
The face plate 139 is desirably securely yet removably aflixed to the casing 11 as by means of a pair of diametrically opposed studs 147 (Fig. 2) extending outwardly from the inner surface thereof which may be positioned in corresponding sockets 113 of casing 11. With the studs thus positioned, the plate is secured to the easing by means of screws 148 which extend through countersunk openings 149 in the rim of the circular plate 139 and are threaded into corresponding openings 151 in casing 11. Desirably the rim of a rosette which encompasses the door knob 126 is snapped over the rim of the face plate 139 after the latter is secured to the casing, to conceal the latter, also enhancing the decorative appearance of the lock.
When the plate 139 has been thus affixed to the casing, the cylindrical end 42' of spindle 42 will be positioned in the corresponding cylindrical bore portion 143 of hub 132 and the inner end 145 of rectangular spindle rod 145 will be positioned in the rectangular bore of spindle 42 so that upon rotation of knob 126 the rectangular bore 144 of hub 132 will rotate rod 145 and spindle-42 to retract latch bolt head 32 through the direct drive to yoke 24 from cam member 38.
The casing 11 with its associated mechanism and the knob assembly 90, when assembled as above described, form an integral unit which may readily be mounted on a door. For this purpose, a circular hole. 153 is formed through the face of the door near the longitudinal edge thereof of diameter considerably larger than the dimensions of the casing 11 of the lock. A smaller cylindrical bore 152 radiates through the edge of the door from said hole 153 and has a face plate 154 at the outer end thereof which serves as the guide for the movement of the latch bolt head 32 and as a trim therefor. The lock preassembled as above described can readily be installed by inserting the latch bolt head 32 first through hole 153 into the inner end of lateral bore 152 whereupon the casing will be readily accommodated in hole 153.
The knob assembly 125 is then positioned so that the studs 147 thereof are aligned with sockets 113 in casing 11 as shown in Fig. 2 and the knob assembly is then pushed into the casing 11 as far as possible and secured thereto by screws 148.
By reason of the slot 25 which accommodates the pin 28 at the inner end of the latch bolt, the latter will automatically shift in slot 25 for alignment with the cylinder bore 152, depending upon the thickness of the door in which it is applied. The sliding mount of studs 147 in sockets 113 also permits the lock to be mounted in doors varying in thickness as the screws 148 which are threaded into openings 151 in casing 11, will securely clamp the two knob assemblies against the intervening door.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A door lock comprising a casing, a spring urged latch bolt protruding laterally from said casing, a pair of rotatably mounted spindle shafts in longitudinally aligned relation in said casing, one of said spindle shafts being longitudinally movable with respect to the other, a knob operatively connected to each of said spindle shafts to rotate the latter, means on said other spindle shaft operatively connected to said latch bolt to retract the latter upon rotation of said spindle shaft by the associated knob, complementary clutch means atlthe adjacent inner ends of said spindle shafts, resilient means normally urging said slidably mounted spindle shaft toward the other spindle shaft for engagement of said complementary clutch means, slidably mounted means operatively connected to said slidably mounted spindle shaft to move the latter away from the other spindle shaft against the urging of said resilient means for release of said clutch means, means to retain the slidably mounted spindle shaft away from the other spindle shaft, the knob associated with said slidably mounted spindle shaft having a cylinder lock therein with a tongue protruding therefrom and operatively connected to said retaining means to release the latter upon rotation of said tongue by a key inserted in said lock and said other spindle shaft having a cam conformation operatively connected to said retaining means to release the latter upon rotation of said other spindle shaft by said other knob, whereby upon release of said retaining means and engagement of said clutch means, rotation of said slidably mounted spindle shaft by the associated knob will rotate the other spindle shaft to retract the latch bolt.
2. A door lock comprising a casing, a spring urged latch bolt protruding laterally from said casing, a pair of rotatably mounted spindle shafts in longitudinally aligned relation in said casing, one of said spindle shafts being longitudinally movable with respect to the other, means on said other spindle shaft operatively connected to said latch bolt to retract the latter, complementary clutch means at the adjacent inner ends of said spindle shafts, resilient means normally urging said slidably mounted spindle shaft toward the other spindle shaft for engagement of said complementary clutch means, a knob hav ing a push button at the outer end thereof, a spindle rod extending through said knob and having a portion thereof coacting with a complementary portion of said knob for rotation of said spindle rod by said knob, said other spindle shaft having a bore therethrough, said spindle rod abutting at its outer end against said push button to be moved thereby and having its inner end extending into said bore, said bore and the inner end of said spindle rod having complementary conformations for rotation of said other spindle shaft by said spindle rod, the inner end of said spindle rod being operatively connected to said slidably mounted spindle shaft to move 6 the latter, upon pressure upon said push button, away from the other spindle shaft against the urging of said resilient means for release of said clutch means, means to retain the slidably mounted spindle shaft away from the other spindle shaft and means to release said retaining means for engagement of said clutch means whereby rotation of said slidably mounted spindle shaft by the associated knob will rotate the other spindle shaft to retract the latch bolt.
3. A door lock comprising a casing, a spring urged latch bolt protruding laterally from said casing, a pair of rotatably mounted spindle shafts in longitudinally aligned relation in said casing, each of said spindle shafts having a longitudinal bore therethrough, one of said spindle shafts being longitudinally movable with respect to the other, a knob operatively connected to each of said spindle shafts to rotate the latter, means on said other spindle shaft operatively connected to said latch bolt to retract the latter upon rotation of said spindle shaft by the associated knob, complementary clutch means at the adjacent inner ends of said spindle shafts, resilient means normally urging said slidably mounted spindle shaft toward the other spindle shaft for engagement of said complementary clutch means, slidably mounted means operatively connected to said slidably mounted spindle shaft to move the latter away from the other spindle shaft against the urging of said resilient means for release of such clutch means, means to retain the slidably mounted spindle shaft away from the other spindle shaft comprising a slidably mounted latch member operatively connected to said slidably mounted spindie shaft and movable therewith and a pivotally mounted latch arm having resilient means operatively connected thereto and normally urging the latch arm toward said latch member into the path of movement thereof, the knob associated with said slidably mounted spindle shaft having a cylinder lock therein with a keyhole at the outer end of the knob and a tongue pivotally mounted at one end to the cylinder lock and extending from such pivoted end through the bore in the slidably mounted spindle shaft, a hollow pin positioned in the bore in said other spindle shaft and movable laterally therein, said pin being engaged by a side edge of said latch arm, the free end of said tongue extending into said pin, the bore of said slidable spindle shaft having an arcuate cam conformation adapted to be engaged by the tongue as it is rotated to pivot the latter, thereby moving the pin laterally to move the latch arm out of the path of movement of the latch member for release thereof and engagement of said clutch means, whereby rotation of said slidably mounted spindle shaft by the associated knob gill rotate the other spindle shaft to retract the latch 4. The combination set forth in claim 3 in which means are provided to retain the keyhole in said tumbler lock in predetermined position.
5. The combination set forth in claim 3 in which means are provided to retain the keyhole in said tumbler lock in predetermined position, said means comprising a face plate affixed to said casing, and having a circular depression in the inner surface thereof, the knob having the cylinder lock therein being rotatably mounted in said face plate, said cylinder lock having a portion extend ing into said depression rigidly affixed to said knob, a spring retainer affixed to said extending portion and having a pair of diametrically opposed laterally extending arms, a pair of coil springs in said depression, each abutting at its ends against both of said arms and an outstanding finger midway between said arms, a plate over said depression having stop means coacting with said finger to limit the rotation of said knob, said springs normally urging said knob to central position to retain the keyhole in said tumbler lock in predetermined position.
