Application filed April 2, 1913. Serial No. 758,405.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Klamath and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knob-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to door locks and more particularly to the class of knob looking devices for door looks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the knob spindle or shank can be locked from the inside of a room or inclosure so that on manipulating the knob at the outside thereof the spindle cannot be turned for the unlocking of the door.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the door when opened, and on the closing thereof, the latch bolt will automatically release the spindle when locked so that it can be turned in the ordinary manner for the unlatching of the door as usual.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of arts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door showing the lock thereof and the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lock. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the lock' showing one of the knobs removed. Fig. 5 is a top plan view showing the knob in position for locking its spindle or shank. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, 10
designates a portion of a door which is of as usual by means of a knob spindle or shank 14 whereby the latch bolt can be retracted or extended in the ordinary wellknown manner.
Mounted upon the lock casing 11 at the outer side thereof is a cam block or plate 15, the same being formed with an opening 16 receiving the spindle or shank 14, and this plate or block is provided with a cam p1'0]eCi3lOI1 17 forming stepped abutment shoulders 18 and 19 respectively, while fixed to one end of the spindle or shank 14 is a knob 20 having its sleeve 21 surrounding the spindle or shank 14, the sleeve being pro vided with a cut away portion 22 forming an abutment shoulder 23 which cooperates with the shoulders 18 and 19 for the locking and unlocking of the spindle or shank 14 in a manner presently described.
F ixed to the door 10 at the outside thereof is the annular flange 24 of a sleeve 25, the same surrounding the spindle or shank 14, the said sleeve 25 in its outer end being provided with a counter-seat 26 in which is received a coiled expansion spring ,27, the same surrounding the spindle or shank 14 and has one end working against the inner end of the counter-seatf26 while its opposite end works against a convex washer 28 carried on the spindle or shank 14, the spring 17 being designed to permit the longitudinal displacement of the spindle or shank 14 in the sleeve 25 for a'purpose presently described.
Rotatably mounted upon the sleeve 25 is a collar orhub 29, the same being formed with an out-turned circular flange 30 to which is fixed a knob 31 which is formed in its inner face with a square shaped recess 32 receiving a correspondingly shaped frame 33, while formed on the spindle or shank 14 at the end contiguous to the knob 31 is a square head 34, the latter being designed to engage in the frame 33 which is held fast in the recess 32 in the knob so that the said knob will be locked with the spindle or shank 14 for the turning thereof at the outside of the door.

Now, should it be desired to lock the spindle or shank 14 against turning movement from the outside of the door 10 it is necessary to pull upon the knob 31 to engage the shoulder 23 of the sleeve 21 with the shoulder 19 on the projection 17, thus retracting the spring 27 and by displacing the spindle or shank 14 to bring the head 34 into the counter-seat in the sleeve 25, thereby disengaging the head from the frame 33 held within the knob 31, thus allowing the knob 31 to freely rotate without acting upon the spindle or shank 14 as the said knob will be unlocked therefrom, and in this manner prevent the working of the latch bolt 12 so that the door cannot be unlatched from the outside when the said knob is thus released from the spindle or. shank 12 controlling the latch bolt of the lock. Should the parts of the device be in the position as just mentioned while the door 10 is open and it is moved to closed position, the latch bolt 12 when engaging the keeper therefor will be automatically retracted, thereby turning the shank or spindle 14 in a direction which will automatically. disengage the shoulder 24 of the sleeve 25 from the shoulder 19 on the cam projection 17, thereby freeing the spring 27 from activity to operate upon the spindle or shank 14 for moving it into locking engagement with the other knob 20, thus enabling the latch bolt to be operated in the ordinary wellknown manner on the turning of either of Should the sleeve 21 0f the knob 20 be in a position to engage the cam 17 so that the knob 31 will freely turn upon the sleeve 25 at the outside of the door, and the latter open, now on the swinging of the turn the shank or spindle 14 for releasing the sleeve 21 from the cam 17, the latch bolt 12 being formed with a forked end 37 carry ing on one limb thereof 1a pair of spaced lugs 38 which actagainst one'arm 39 of the hub '40 surrounding the spindle or shank 14 of the lock so-that the latch bolt 12 when riding over the keeper on the door casement will be retracted, thereby turning the hub 40 cause the sleeve 21 of the knob 20 to rideott of the camprojection 17, thus shifting the spindle or shank 14 under the action of the spring 27 to bring the squared head 34 into the socket frame 33 correspondingly shaped thereto and fixed in the knob 31 so that the latter will be locked ..to the spindle or shank, thus allowing the lock to be oper-.
