Abstract

584,297. Spray carburetters. ROBERTS, G. A. Dec. 27, 1944, No. 25871. [Class 7 (iii)] A choke valve is controlled by a spring fitted in such a fashion.that the valve has an unstable intermediate position from which it can move into either a fully closed or fully open position. During starting and warming up of an engine the valve can be set at the engine in the intermediate position in which it will remain but when the vibration of the engine exceeds a certain amount such as when a machine in which the, engine is mounted is moving the spring will move the valve into either the closed or open position. If it snaps into the closed position the operator will. have to stop the machine and move it by hand at the engine into the open position. The arrangement is particularly applicable to tractor carburetters and is designed to prevent the engine being run with a choke partially closed as is possible with the usual manual control. As shown a choke valve B has attached to its existing control arm D a triangular plate G carrying a bolt H to which one end of a spring I is connected. The other end of the spring is attached at J to a strap K fixed around the induction pipe A. In Fig. 5, the choke valve is shown in an intermediate position in which the two ends of the spring and the valve shaft C are in line. In Fig. 1 the valve is shown in the open position. When in the intermediate position the tension of the spring is prevented from moving the valve as long as the bolt H is in line with the valve shaft C and the attachment J. If the valve is moved slightly by vibration the spring exerts a turning movement and snaps it to one or other side. An existing stop prevents the spring moving the valve past the open or closed position. If the spring stretches in use the bolt H can be moved to alternative holes O or P provided in the plate G for this purpose. Also if room permits the strap K can be moved along the induction pipe to alter the spring tension. The strap can be rotated to vary the intermediate position of the valve. The triangular plate can be replaced by an arm fitted directly to the valve shaft.
