Abstract

571,932. Spray carburetters. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 13, 1943, No. 20888. Convention date, Feb. 18. [Class 7 (iii)] A thermo-sensitive element acts as, or positions, a movable stop to determine the extent to which an unbalanced choke valve, urged to open by suction and to close by the thermosensitive device, can open of its own accord, when an independent manual control, which can move the valve throughout the whole range of movement thereof, is inoperative. A choke valve 22 provided with a poppet relief valve 26 is pivoted eccentrically about a shaft 24 which carries an arm 112 terminating in a lug 110 disposed between two stops 122, 124 on a Bowden wire 106 passing through the lug. When the wire 106 is pulled by a knob 101, the stop 122 engages the lug 110 and the valve 22 is completely closed, the other stop 124 engaging the lug when the wire is pushed to open the valve. As shown, the wire is locked in an intermediate position by a spring- pressed ball 116 engaging in a groove 114 in a plunger 100 connecting the wire 106 with the knob 101, the manual control is inoperative and the valve is actuated by suction tending to open it and a heat-responsive device urging it towards the closed position. The end of an arm 74 rigid with the shaft 24 is pivoted to a rod 98, the remote end of which slides in a socket in a sleeve 96 adjustably secured to a link 90 having its further end connected to a U-shaped heat-responsive element 76 disposed adjacent a hot spot 18. The sleeve 96 is adjusted to prevent the element 76, movement of which is limited by a stop screw 84, from closing the valve 22 completely, the rod 98 rising partly out of its socket in the sleeve 96. when the valve is wholly closed by pulling the knob 101. Opening the valve manually overrides the closing force of the element 76. The arm 74 is connected by a rod 72 with an idling cam 62 engaged by a stop 68 on the throttle valve control arm 40 to prevent complete closure of the throttle valve 36 and the cam may have a stepped portion 66 to provide for fast idling, a lost-motion connection 63, 65 permitting the throttle valve 36 to open slightly independently of the choke valve 22.
