Abstract

214,199. Barbarou, M. J. B. April 13, 1923, [Convention date]. Fluid-actuated valves. -The opening of the throttle valve of a carburettor for an aviation or motor vehicle engine is automatically modified or controlled according to the altitude at which the engine is working. The carburettor throttle valve 3 is mounted on a spindle 2, an arm 4 on which is connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 6, Figs. 1, 3, keyed to a shaft 7. The other arm of lever 6 carries a stud 8 through the head of which can slide an arm 9 projecting from a ring 10 which can rotate about a piece 16 provided with an elongated hole 17 through which the shaft 7 passes. Another arm 11 on the ring 10 slides through the head of a stud 12 carried by a disc 13 moving freely over the shaft and actuated by the driver through a rod 15 and stud 14. The piece 16 is connected through a rod 19 to an elastic diaphragm 20 which divides a receptacle 21 into two chambers 22, 23 of which 23 is open to the atmosphere and 22 is connected with a vessel 24 in which any predetermined pressure may be produced. The diaphragm is also loaded by a spring 26. To open the throttle valve 3, the driver pulls the rod 15. This rotates the disc 13 which, through stud 12 and arms 11, 9, rotates the bell crank 6 and opens the throttle valve through rod 5. If the engine is at a low altitude the piece 16, ring 10 and the throttle valve are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1: At a higher altitude, the diaphragm will push the rod 19 so as to cause the piece 16 to slide over the shaft 7 and, the disc 13 and stud 14 being fixed, the ring 10 and arm 9 will be rotated to move the bell crank and open the throttle valve still further as shown in dotted lines. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the throttle control lever 28 with pawl 31 works over a toothed quadrant pivoted at 29 and drawn by a spring 34 against a stop 33. The quadrant may however be moved to modify the throttle position by a diaphragm 35 similar to the diaphragm 20, Fig. 1, which acts on the quadrant through a rod 35<a>, pin 38, and slot 39.
