Abstract

705,851. Pneumatic dash pots. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 16, 1951 [June 7, 1950], No. 11398/51. Class 103(3) [Also in Groups XXV and. XXVII] To avoid stalling an internal combustion. engine due to abrupt closing of the throttle valve, an air dash pot 3 is provided so operated by an operating-arm 7 for the valve that the final closing movement of the valve is retarded but its initial opening movement is not retarded. The dash pot 3 comprises a diaphragm 17 between dented plates 19, 20 and having its outer edge held by the crimped edges of a housing 14, 15. On release of the accelerator pedal the arm 7 engages a screw 8 adjustably secured by a nut 10 to a sleeve 9 provided with a flange 14 forming a seat for a disc valve 25 perferably of flexible rubberized fabric. The sleeve is connected to the diaphragm, movement of which forces air from the left-hand space of the housing 14, 15 through a restricted orifice 26 in the flange 24 into the right-hand space via a bore 29 and hole 30 in the sleeve 9, the valve 25 having closed the end of the bore. The transfer of air is slow with consequent retardation of the throttle movement. On opening the throttle the spring 18 moves the diaphragm to the right forcing the air back into the bore and unseating the valve 25 to allow unrestricted return of the air, movement of the valve being limited by fingers 27 bent outwardly from the plate 19.
