666,860. Turning gear. ALLEN & SIMMONDS (HOLDINGS), Ltd., and HEWETT, A. E. April 28,1949 [June 7,1948], No. 15372/48. Class 7(v) An internal-combustion engine starting mechanism comprises a movable rack 3 which is mounted to engage a pinion 7 on the crankshaft of the engine so as to be freely rotatable in one direction only and resilient means such as a spring 10 which is secured to the rack and effective to exert on the rack an auxiliary pull to that exerted by the operator in starting the engine. The pinion 7 has a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism. The rack slides in brackets 5 and 8 mounted on the crankcase, and the spring is mounted in lugs 9, 11 which are secured to the bracket 8 and the rack respectively.
