Abstract

580,984. Universal joints. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.). May 23, 1944, No. 9963. [Class 80 (ii)] A flexible drive from a rotatable quill-shaft 12 to the axle 10 of an electric locomotive, comprises a disc 21 of rubber or the like, vulcanized to members 22, 23 secured to the quill and axle respectively, the rubber disc being disposed within and substantially concentric with a gear-rim 15, bolted to a flange 13 on the quill-shaft, and driven by a pinion on the shaft of a motor mounted in bearings on the quill-shaft. An additional similar rubber disc 25 may be provided at the opposite end of the quill-shaft. In Fig. 2, the rubber disc 21 is bonded internally to an L- sectioned part 22 which is pressed on the axle 10 and has peripheral teeth 24 to increase the bond area. The disc is bonded externally to a ring 23 bolted to the quill-flange 13 along with the gear-rim 15. In Fig. 4, not shown, the rubber disc is bonded at its side-faces to side-plates bolted respectively to the quill-flange and a flange on an L-sectioned part pressed on the axle. The disc comprises three discs of rubber with two interposed metal discs bonded to the rubber, the inner and outer peripheries of the assembly being of parallel conical form.
