Abstract

592,043. Universal joints. METALASTIK, Ltd., and GOLDSCHMIDT, M. Sept. 13, 1944, No. 17463. [Class 80 (ii) [Also in Group VIII] The invention relates to elastic rollers for guiding machine parts or any other purpose. To a metal hub 14, or to the outer surface of a metal ring which can be secured on the hub, a rubber annulus 15, Fig. 1, is surfacebonded and a metal ring 11 is surfacebonded to the outer surface of the annulus 15. A resilient outer periphery or tread .10, which may be of hard rubber or a plastic compound, preferably reinforced with textile fabric, is bonded or otherwise attached to the outer surface of the metal ring 11. A further rubber annulus 17, Fig. 3, and metal ring 18 may be surfacebonded between an inner metal ring 16 and a tread 19 and the metal rings may project beyond rubber annuli 15, 17 to allow for ready dissipation of any heat that may be generated during operation. According to the Provisional Specification rubber annuli may be arranged with their sides bonded to flanges so that radial forces will subject the rubber to shear.
