Abstract
580,672. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and AMER, D. F. Oct. 6, 1944, No. 19180. [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast circuit - breaker, a passage is provided so that some of the gas may by-pass the nozzle-bore and flow from the high-pressure side to the lowpressure side of the nozzle to scavange and cool any insulation otherwise subject to the destructive effects of arcing. In Fig. 1, the blast transfers the arc from a contact B, through an insulating, or insulated conducting, nozzle C to contact E connected to the metal casing A and the contact. B. Gas also passes through passages F' in the insulating bush F into the annular compression chamber F' and thence through the annular throttling space F' to scavange and cool the exposed surfaces of the nozzle C and bush F. To protect insulation H', H' supporting and surrounding an auxiliary electrode H used in "resistance switching," Fig. 2, high-pressure gas is conveyed to annular spaces H', H' by a conduit H<5>. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the "resistance" electrode is parallel to the axis of the nozzle and its bushing H<1> is surrounded by the scavanging air within a tubular casing disposed mainly outside the main casing. The bush H<3> diverges within the main casing. In Fig. 4, (not shown), an external " resistance " electrode together with its bushing and casing is bent through 180‹ so as to enter the main casing and cause the scavanging gas to oppose the gas-blast.
