Abstract
868,792. Gas-blast switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 20, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 19426/56. Class 38 (5). In an air or gas blast circuit-breaker having control means which may effect the opening of isolating contacts 1.7, 1.8 without the prior opening of main current interrupting contacts, means are provided to promote turbulence in the air in the space in which an arc may be drawn between the isolating contacts on opening. In Fig. 1, which shows the invention applied to the arrangement of Specification 817,782, a pipe 20 leads from a port 21 in the operating cylinder 5.3 to a nozzle 22, so that when compressed air is supplied through the opening valve 6 to the lefthand end of the cylinder for opening the isolating contacts, a stream 23 of compressed air is directed upwardly from the nozzle 22 into the vicinity of the fixed isolator contact 1.8. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pipe interconnects the base of the insulating column 1.3 with the pipe 10 and a nozzle is arranged in the end of the interrupting contact chamber 1.1 to provide a horizontal stream of air into the space between the isolating contacts when opened. In a further arrangement a separate insulated conduit may extend from the port 21 to a jet located adjacent the chamber 1.1. Specification 777,543 also is referred to.
