Abstract

1,081,080. Gas blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 26, 1965 [Dec. 17, 1964], No. 50323/65. Heading H2B. A circuit breaker comprises a tank 2 containing SF 6 at relatively low pressure (40 p.s.i.); a reservoir 3, 4 containing SF 6 at high pressure (230 p.s.i.); an arc chamber 21 located in the tank and containing the fixed contact 22; a moving contact 24 together with an operating cylinder 26 also in the tank; and a blast valve A controlling the flow of extinguishing gas from the reservoir to the arc chamber 21. Cylinder 26 is fed with high pressure gas through valves B or C to open or close the contacts. A latch 37 is arranged to hold the contact 24 in the open or closed position without preventing it being moved by the operating cylinder. A cam surface 53 on the contact 24 operates valve D or E to open or close auxiliary contacts 56, 57. The valves A, B, C are controlled by electromagnetically operated pilot valves A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>1</SP> respectively. Valve C<SP>1</SP> is energized by a pushbutton CSC to close the breaker. Valves B, A can then be energized through the auxiliary contacts 57 to open the breaker and initiate the blast by means of push-button CST or a protective relay PR. The breaker contact assemblies are supported on bushed conductors 15 surrounded by current transformers 14 and potential tapping cylinders 16. In a modification (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) latch 37 is replaced by a pneumatically withdrawn latch which positively holds the contact in its closed position. A three-phase breaker may have three tanks 2. and have common control valves A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>1</SP>. In an alternative form (Figs. 4-7, not shown) a three-phase breaker employing common valves A, B, C as well and having the contacts coupled together by insulating rods (61) is mounted in a single tank. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown) the current transformers (14<SP>1</SP>) are mounted inside cylindrical extensions (11<SP>1</SP>) of the tank. The arc chamber 21 is of P.T.F.E.
