Abstract
979,783. Gas-blast switches. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. April 27, 1961 [April 29, 1960] No. 15245/60. Heading H2B. A recirculating gas-blast circuit-breaker comprises a high-pressure gas container 11, Fig. 1, communicating through a blast valve 30 with a low-pressure gas container 12 which is at super-atmospheric pressure and into which a blast of gas is delivered from the high-pressure container across an arc gap between a pair of contacts 18, 21 separated on opening of the blast valve, the low-pressure container 12 being of conductive material at the potential of the downstream contact 21 and the two contacts being insulated from one another by solid insulation 15 forming part of a wall of the high-pressure container 11. A pump 40 restores the pressure differential between the containers after operation of the circuit-breaker. The blast sleeve-valve 30 is coupled by means not shown to the contact-operating mechanism 25, and when opened permits the blast to flow through a nozzle 19, a conical passage 38 and ports 36 into a cooler formed by baffle walls 31, 34 within the container 12. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a two-break arrangement comprising two of the above units sharing a common low-pressure container and mounted on a single insulating post. Fig. 5 shows a four-break arrangement housed in a dead tank 80 filled with compressed air to the same pressure as that within the low-pressure containers 82, 83, two high-pressure containers 81 each containing two breaks. In this case the fixed contacts 106 are nozzles formed in the domed end walls 85 of the associated lowpressure chambers and the blast valves 110 are located within the nozzles. These valves are operated under the control of pilot valves 112 operated by cams 118 on a contact operating shaft 96. The low-pressure containers 82, 83 communicate with the interior of the tank 80 through filters 124 and the pump 90 pumps air from the tank 80 into the high-pressure containers. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate other four-break arrangements.
