Abstract
578,527. Fire extinguishers. HARRIS, G. W. March 1, 1944, No. 3835. [Class 47 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A fire extinguisher of the type in which a liquid is expelled from a container by gas pressure is adapted for use either upright or inverted, by closing the lower end of the dip tube a by a plug b with lateral passages b<2> and a central bore b<3>. A coaxial outer tube c is adapted to slide freely on the tube a by means of guides c<2> and is provided with openings c<1> near the top. Near its lower end it is closed by a plug e with a central opening e<1> and is provided with gaps c<3> below the plug. When the extinguisher is in an upright position as shown,' the liquid is discharged' through the gaps c<3>, then through the passages e<1>, b<2>, b<3> and up the tube a. When the extinguisher is inverted, the tube c slides under gravity until what was its upper extremity abuts against the inner face of the closing cap d' and the plug b closes the opening e<1> in the plug e. Discharge then takes place through the openings c', up the annulus between the two tubes, through the passages b<2> and down the tube a.
