Abstract
638,952. Fire-extinguishing. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., MATHISEN, A., WILKINSON SWORD CO., Ltd., and RANDOLPH, H. B. March 9, 1948, Nos. 7212, 19276 and 24015. [Class 47 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a fire-extinguisher in which liquid is ejected from a container by gases produced by the combustion of a cartridge, the outlet of the container is closed by a seal which is broken before the cartridge is fired. In one form, Fig. 1, a stopper 4 connected by thin webs 5 with a head 3 is blown out by ignition of a charge 8 by a fuse 10 to open the container 2, and through spring contacts 18. 28 and 20, 29 and terminals 15, 16 fires a cartridge 32 mounted in a housing 33 at the other end of the container. The housing 33 has openings 41 closed by seals 42. In a modification, the cartridge is provided with a percussion cap which is fired by a pin directly connected with the stopper through slidable rods. In a further modification, the firing pin is operable by the stopper with lost motion through a rod carrying a cam projection co-operating with pivoted pawls. In another form, Fig. 4, the cartridge 136 is mounted on the head 111. The stopper 112 is blown out by the ignition of detonators communicating with a groove 113, and after movement of the stopper to open a groove 133 and passage 134 the cartridge 136 is ignited. The cartridge holder 137 is enclosed in a tube 116 closed at its upper end by a seal 118. In a modification, the cartridge is fired by a pin carried by a piston operable by the detonator gases. In a further modification, the tube 116 is provided with perforations and a restriction at its upper end. Two or more outlets each closed by a stopper may be provided and furnished with an indicator pin which is displaced when a stopper is blown out. A shield may be provided in the container adjacent the outlet when the container is for horizontal use. In a further form, Fig. 5, for pneumatic or hydraulic operation, the cartridge holder 161 is coupled to the stopper 152 by a rod 171 so that upon application of fluid pressure to a duct 156, the holder 161 which has a piston-like upper end 165 is raised to open the stopper 152 and then fire the cartridge 160 by engagement with a fixed firing pin 169. The cartridge is of tubular form so that the gases produced can pass through openings 162 to a passage 175 closed by a seal 178.
