Abstract
1432621 Igniters RONSON CORP 19 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 19189/73 Heading F4F A method of igniting a gas in an ignition space comprises releasing into the gas in the space, quantities of aluminium borohydride and an ignition aid which is either methanol or acetaldehyde to form a reactive mixture which ignites the gas. An igniter, Fig. 1, comprises an outer cartridge 13 having a tapered part 14 in one end wall. An inner cartridge 15 reciprocable within cartridge 13 contains a hollow plunger 21 containing absorbent material saturated with aluminium borohydride, the plunger having an end closed by a cap 24 having a tip 27 adapted to seal an orifice 13a in cartridge 15. A spring 20 acts between a shoulder 22 on plunger 21 and a seal retainer 18 which may be integral with an end cap 17 of cartridge 15. Cartridge 13 is sealed by a cap 28 and seal retainer 31 to which is secured a rod 30 and one end of a spring 33. An absorbent cylinder 31 is saturated with the ignition aid. In use a blow on cartridge 13 adjacent orifice 14 or sharp acceleration/deceleration thereof, causes plunger 21 and cartridge 15 to move rearwardly. Cartridge 15 moves against spring 33 until end cap 17 strikes rod 30 and a space is provided between cartridge 15 and sealing gasket 34 for passage of the ignition aid to port 14. Plunger 21 continues to move towards cap 17 thereby opening port 13a for passage of aluminium borohydride through port 13a to port 14. In Fig. 2 a lighter comprises two cartridges (47, 48) containing aluminium borohydride and ignition aid respectively, movable within housing 35 and surrounded by springs 51, 52. A finger piece 36 is pivotable against the action of spring 38 to move a striker plate 41 into contact with the cartridges thereby moving them inwardly, the plate pivoting about pin 42 until it abuts stop 44 and flanges 53, 54 on the cartridges are freed from the plate 41. The cartridges then impact against a pin 55 to discharge some of their contents towards a baffle 57 located adjacent a burner valve 62 communicating with a fuel gas reservoir 60.
