A grenade comprises a plastics container 13 e.g. of nylon or acetal resin for containing particle or fluid tear gas material 25 and a piston 27 for ejecting the tear gas material from the container; a cover 15 for the container, provided with a shear disc 17 having a surrounding annular weakened section 17a; and a frusto-conical pressure transducing transmitter 21 having a central opening. On ignition of the propellant charge 39 the piston 27 is driven forwardly and imparts compression pressures, to the tear gas material 25, which pressures are transmitted to the shear disc 17 both directly and through the pressure transducing transmitter to cause shear and blow-out of the disc 17 and expulsion of the tear gas material. A flanged cap 23 may be provided over the shear disc to give protection against rupture from external forces. The propellant charge 39 and delay charge 45 are contained in a chamber assembly 29 formed with inner and outer body portions 29a and 29b which are slidably fitted together. Sealing is provided by an 0-ring 37, and the entire assembly 29 is retained within a recess 31 by retainer pins 35. A shear disc 33 and a blow-out cover 41 disposed in an annular groove 43 cover the propellant charge 39. The delay fuze 45 consists of a powder mixture of ground glass or silica and zirconium barium chromate and is carried within a metallic tube 47. A washer 49 and a percussion cap 51 are disposed over the outer end of the tube and the percussion cap is adapted to be fired by a spring-driven striker 57 which is normally held in the safe position by an L-shaped handle 53, hooked under a lip 29aa of the chamber assembly 29 and retained by a withdrawable pin 55. The grenade may be either hand held, thrown, or shot toward the target.
