Abstract
780,331. Fire extinguishers. PYRENE CO., Ltd. July 13, 1955 [July 13, 1954], No. 20469/54. Class 47 [Also in Group XXVIII] A liquid projection apparatus, such as a fire extinguisher, which will operate in any position, comprises a container 1 from which liquid is forced by gas pressure to a discharge passage 4 connected to a dip tube 6 having a port or ports 26 at its upper end through which liquid will pass when the apparatus is inverted, the flow of liquid into the dip tube at the lower end being uncontrolled and at the upper end being controlled by a single gravity operated sleeve valve 27 which closes the port or ports 26 when the apparatus is upright and opens them on inversion, the bores of the passage for the flow of liquid upon inversion of the apparatus and the length of the dip tube below the ports 26 being so correlated as to maintain in the tube 6 a column of liquid preventing the flow of gas to the discharge passage 4. The dip tube comprises an upper part 7 on which the sleeve valve 27 is mounted, and a lower part 8 movably attached to the part 7 by a flexible bellows 9. A weight 29 ensures that the bottom of the part 8 bears against the side wall of the container when the apparatus is tilted.
