FIRE-EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
Application filed March 29, 1923. Serial No. 628,478;
This invention relates to fire extinguishing apparatus, the object in view being to provide a portablefire extinguisher of large capacity, especially designed for use in airplane and aircraft hangars, where compact ness and size are important features, in view of the fact that it is necessary to carry or transport the fire extinguishers under the wings of airplanes.
A further object of the inventionis topro-- vide a fire extinguisher containing fire extinguishing fluid or liquid, 2. pressure means for expelling the same from a suitable container, and a single valve for throwing the device into full operation. The fire extinguisher is illustrated as of the wall type, as fire extinguishers for the purpose above referred to are usually hung at various places around the walls of an airplane hangar where they will be convenient at all times.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein described, shown and claimec.
In the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fire extinguisher.
Figure 2 is a vertical diametrical section through the same, showing certain parts in elevation.
The improved fire extinguisher embodies a container 5, preferably of hollow, cylindrical formation and having fitted to one end thereof a removable cap 6 to give access to the interior of the container. A bail shaped handle 7 is fitted to the container 5, enabling the same to be carried readily orhung upon a wall or other support.
Within the lower end of the container there is a bottle-like holder 8 containing suitable fire extinguishing fluid or liquid such as carbon tetrachloride, said holder being provided at its lower end with a filler cap 9 tightly screwed or otherwise fitted thereon and also communicating at its lower end with a discharge pipe 10 which extends longitudinally within the container5 to a point near the upper end thereof, where it is extended laterally through the wall of the container leaving a nipple end 11 to which a flexible hose 12 is applied, the hose 12 having at its free end a suitable nozzle 13.
In the upper portion of the container 1 there is another bottle-like holder 14 containing any suitable gas under compression such as carbonic acid gas. A pipe connection 15 extends from the holder 14 to the holder 8 for carrying the pressure from one to the other and a single manually operable valve 16 controls the pipe connection'15. The valve 16 is provided on the outer end thereof, exterior of the container 1 with a hand wheel 17 or any other suitable operating device.
In operating the fire extinguisher, it is only necessary to open the valve 16 by means of the handle or operating device 17. Immediately thereupon the pressure in the holder 14 is liberated and passes to the interior of theholder 8, thereby forcing the fire extinguishing fluid or liquid therefrom through the pipe 10 and the hose 12, and outward through the distributing nozzle 13. Uusually the fire extinguisher is transported from place to place upon a wheeled truck and therefore compactness and size are important features as it'is necessary to carry planes. Upon arriving at the point where the fire occurs, it is only necessary to direct the hose 13 toward the fire and set the fire the fire extinguisher under the wings of airoperable exteriorly of said container to control the flow of gas through said connecting means and into said fluid chamber to expel the fluid from said chamber through said discharge pipe.
In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures.
