Abstract

578,097. Surgical alloys. DELORO SMELTING & REFINING CO,. Ltd. Sept. 3, 1943, No. 14441. [Class 82 (i)] An alloy consisting of 15-65 per cent cobalt, 10-45 per cent nickel, 10-28 per cent chromium, 5-20 per cent vanadium, 2-10 per cent of molybdenum and/or tungsten, 0.1- 0.75 per cent carbon, 0.01-2.50 per cent boron, 0.3-1.0 per cent manganese and 0.3-1.0 per cent silicon, the ratio of silicon to manganese being between 0.8 and 2 and the sum of the vanadium, boron, silicon and manganese contents being in excess of 6 per cent. Preferred maxima for the silicon and manganese contents are respectively 0.60 and 0.75 per cent. Preferred compositions within narrower percentage ranges consist of 30-50 per cent cobalt, 10-29 per cent nickel, 20-25 per cent chromium, 10-15 per cent vanadium, 3-5 per cent of molybdenum or tungsten, 0.3-0.5 per cent of each of silicon and manganese, 0.2-0.6 carbon and 0.2-0.5 per cent boron. A particular composition contains substantially 18 per cent chromium, 15 per cent nickel, 10 per cent vanadium, 4 per cent molybdenum, 0.25 per cent boron, 0.30 per cent carbon, 0.30 per cent silicon, 0.35 per cent manganese, the remainder being cobalt. The alloys may be made by melting the cobalt, nickel, chromium, molybdenum or tungsten and 10-15 per cent vanadium, deoxidising the melt with silicon and manganese in the presence of calcium boride and centrifugally casting the deoxidised alloy into a desired shape. Specification 454,881 is referred to.
