Abstract

572,495. Spark arresters. GANZ, H. Feb. 8, 1944, No. 2353. [Class 25] [Also in Group XXVII] In an exhaust silencer especially for marine and locomotive engines, but also applicable to furnace flues, a chamber 1 has (a) axially arranged inlet and outlet branches 4, 6, (b) approximately coaxial guide members, the first of which imparts a rotary motion to the gases and (c) orifices 5 provided in order that deposited solid particles may be blown into the stream and thereby reduced in size so that they do not settle. The orifices 5 are either arranged as shown at a place where negative pressure exists or they are provided with tubular extensions into the stream so that a portion of the untreated gases is blown through them. The guide members comprise opposed conical members 8 which are covered with sound damping material, e.g., asbestos, compressed glass wool, felt or rubber and may be filled with similar material. Two cages of guide members 7 are arranged one above the other but the lower one may be replaced by tapering blades arranged in an annular passage. A screw baffle may also be placed on the inside of the casing 1.
