Abstract

584,254. Silencers; treating exhaust gases. NEWTON, E. P. (Likuvag Akt.-Ges.). April 14, 1943, No: 5992. [Class 7 (ii)] To reduce output losses from the engine exhaust, the exhaust gases discharge into a series of overlapping nozzles A having, in section a slotted aerofoil profile. The nozzles may be preceded by one or more sound, filters F adapted to damp out most efficiently waves over 200 Hertz and having a length equal to or less than 0.4 metre. A line connecting the inlet. edges of the nozzles with the last outlet edge in the direction of now is approximately straight and the initial angles of the nozzles increase in the direction of flow, the first angle being a negative one, while the curvatures of the nozzles decrease in that direction .A jacket, converging on to the connecting line may surround the nozzles. The throat of the first nozzle is not wider than the exhaust pipe R, the end of which is reduced to enter the nozzle and the end of the last nozzle may be wider than an exhaust pipe into which it delivers. In use, air is drawn in through the gaps between the nozzles by the injector action of the exhaust gases.
