Abstract

572,270. Safety and warning devices for motor vehicles. COX, R. C. May 1, 1944, No. 9469/43. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXII] A protective device for a vehicle comprises resiliently mounted arms 1 ... 4 mounted at the four corners of the vehicle so as to project laterally therefrom, each arm being provided with a knob 10 which is pivoted at 12 to a sleeve 13 on the arm and is adapted to close electric contacts 11, 14 when the arm encounters an obstacle. The electric circuit thus closed may be that of a warning lamp or buzzer or may serve to earth the ignition circuit of the vehicle engine and thus stop the engine. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the arms project forwardly and rearwardly, as well as laterally, and the rear arms 3, 4 are connected by a wire 8. Each arm may comprise flexible tubing or a coiled spring 9, Fig. 4, secured by a bracket 1.7 to the end of a bumper 6 or 7. The arm may be adjustably mounted on the bracket 17 by means of a long screw and lock-nuts or by a telescopic fitting.
