Abstract

The flexible probe with its housing would be a fixture to a vehicle. The flexibility of the probe is also a feature which will minimise the possibility of damage. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle parking/distance sensor This invention relates to a vehicle parking device indicating distance from obstructions.
Some drivers, because of the size or type of vehicle, or the size of the driver, have difficulty in assessing distances separating them from other vehicles and obstructions, ie. walls etc. The sensor is designed primarily for reversing, but is also effective for indicating obstructions to the front or side of the vehicle.
The unit is designed so that when the vehicle is in motion the sensor, with a rubber buffer at its end, will oscillate about its point of support within the body (4)-see drawing-and make intermittent contact on the iocking nut (1). This will then provide an earth to a buzzer unit within the vehicle already live bya) Automatically by connection to reversing lights, or b) Manually, by means of a switch arrangement.
This will give an intermittent signal indicating the sensor is operational and when contact with an obstruction is made, will give a firm contact on the locking nut and a continuous signal will result, indicating distance from the obstruction.
Figure 1 shows the mounting of the sensor direct onto the bodywork of the vehicle, and the optimum position of buzzer within saloon vehicles.
Figure 1A shows the mounting of the sensor via a fixing plate protruding off the rear bumper or similar, and the suggested positioning of the buzzer.

CLAIMS A metal probe supported by a housing (body) affixed to a vehicle which 1. Will give off an intermittent alarm signal indicating that the unit is operational by the oscillation of the probe afforded by the movement of the vehicle.
2. Will give a continuous alarm signal upon contact with an obstruction.
CLAIMS (14 March 1985) Amendments to the claims have been filed, and have the following effect: Claims 1 and 2 above have been deleted or textually amended.
New or textually amended claims have been filed as follows: 1. A metal sensor/probe supported by a housing (body) affixed to a vehicle which- (a) Will give off an intermittent alarm signal that the unit is operational by the oscillation of the probe afforded by the movement of the vehicle.
(b) Will give a continuous alarm signal upon contact with an obstruction.
2. A sensor/probe (as in Claim 1) of alternative material to metal, but affording means of making electrical earth contact-for example, a conductive sleeve or ring.
