Abstract
Apparatus for controlling hazard responsive means of a vehicle, such as a hooter or a valve member of a braking system of the vehicle, comprises an antenna (15, 16 and 17) adapted to extend outwardly from an exterior surface (12, 13 and 14) of the vehicle (10), a switch operable when the antenna (15, 16 and 17) is displaced from a pre-selected position (shown in full lines in the drawing) and an electric circuit, including the switch, adapted to generate a signal for controlling the hazard responsive means when the switch is operated so that movement of the antenna from the pre-selected position relative to the vehicle effects operation of the control circuit to generate the signal. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for controlling hazard responsive means of a vehicle
This invention relates to apparatus for controlling hazard responsive means of a vehicle.
With vehicles, such as fork lift trucks, for lifting and transporting loads, the operator of such a vehicle, in concentrating on operating the vehicle to manouever a load being handled by the vehicle, often neglects other aspects involved in controlling the vehicle with a result that the vehicle collides with other objects. In the case of fork lift trucks, which often are required to operate in confined spaces, it is known for such vehicles to be reversed into other object because the attention of the driver is directed to a load raised on forks located at the front of the vehicle.
It is desirable, therefore, to provide apparatus for controlling hazard responsive means of a vehicle, such as means for providing an audible signal and/or means for automatically operating a brake system of the vehicle, to arrest movement of the vehicle when the vehicle is moving in a collision path with an object such that the hazard responsive means is actuated immediately prior to collision.
According to the present invention, there is provided apparatus for controlling hazard responsive means of a vehicle comprising an antenna adapted to extend outwardly from an exterior surface of the vehicle, a switch operable when the antenna is displaced from a preselected position, and an electric circuit, including the switch, adapted to generate a signal for controlling the hazard responsive means when the switch is operated so that movement of the antenna from the pre-selected position relative to the vehicle effects operation of the control circuit to generate the said signals.
If, therefore, the vehicle is moving in a collision path with an object, the antenna will engage the object prior to collision of the vehicle therewith and the antenna will move relative to the vehicle as the vehicle moves relative to the object with a result that the hazard responsive means is activated.
A plurality of said antennae may be provided, each having an associated switch and each switch being included in said circuit and said circuit being arranged to generate said signal when any of said switches is operated.
Each of the antennae may be located adjacent a corresponding one of a plurality of surfaces of said vehicle, each said surface being at an angle to an adjacent said surface.
Preferably, three such antennae are provided, one antenna being located adjacent a rear surface of the vehicle and the other two antennae being located on opposite side surfaces of the vehicle.
The or each antenna may comprise an elongate member.
The or each antenna may comprise a first portion adapted to operate the, or a corresponding, switch and a second portion pivotally connected to the first portion.
The apparatus may comprise actuating means for pivoting the said portion relative to the first portion.
Operation of the actuating means may be controlled in accordance with operation of a drive source of the vehicle.
The hazard responsive means may be an electrically operable device adapted to provide an audible signal when supplied by said signal.
In addition to the device adapted to provide an audible signal, or as an alternative thereto, the hazard responsive means may comprise an electrically operable device adapted to control a brake system of the vehicle to retard the vehicle when the device is supplied by said signal.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic representation, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a fork lift truck 10 comprising a body portion 11 having opposite facing side surfaces 12, 13 and a rear surface 14.
The side surface 1 2 has located thereon an antenna 1 5. The side surface 13 has located thereon an antenna 16 and the rear surface 14 has located thereon an antenna 1 7. Each of the antennae 15, 16 and 1 7 comprises a first portion located adjacent the corresponding surface 1 5, 1 6 or 1 7 and a second portion which is elongate and which is pivotally connected to the first portion. Therefore, each second portion of each antenna 15, 1 6 and 17 is pivotable from an inoperative verticle position (as shown in chain dotted lines for antenna 17) to an operative horizontal position (as shown in full lines for each of the antennae 1 5, 16 and 1 7).
The truck 10 is provided with an electric circuit (not shown) including a plurality of switches each being associated with a corresponding one of the antennae 15, 1 6 and 17 and each being operable when a corresponding antenna 15, 1 6 or 17 is moved when in an operative position on contact with an object during relative movement of the truck 10 and the object. The circuit also includes an electrically operable hooter or an electrically operable valve member for controlling a braking system of the truck 10 or may include both the hooter and the valve member, whereby the hooter or the valve member or both hooter and valve member are actuated when one or more of the switches is operated.
The circuit may also include means for moving the antennae to and from an operative position in accordance with operation of a drive motor of the vehicle. In this manner, when the motor of the vehicle is switched off, the circuit controls the antennae to move from an operative to an inoperative position and when the motor is switched on the circuit controls the antennae to move from an inoperative position to an operative position.
It will be appreciated that, with apparatus in accordance with the present invention, a hazard responsive means, such as a hooter or a valve member for controlling a braking system of the vehicle, is rendered operative if an antenna of the vehicle engages an object during relative movement of the vehicle and the object so that the drive of the vehicle is directed to the possibility of collision of the vehicle with the object.
