Abstract

570,701. Steam boilers. FREEMAN, G. D. Nov. 10, 1943. No. 18680. [Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii)] In a wet-back Scotch boiler a baffle 6 is located in the combustion chamber 3 so that at least some of the hot gases from the furnace 2 are directed, as shown by the arrows, along the lower part and back of said chamber. The baffle may be made of firebrick, with its bottom 8 cut away to concave or convex arcuate form, and it is preferably secured to the walls of the combustion chamber by supports 10 with a fixed or adjustable damper 9 at its upper end. In a modification the baffle is permanently attached to the front wall of the combustion chamber and is made hollow with its interior in communication with the water space of the boiler. Alternatively the baffle is constituted by a steam superheater in the form of a flattened coil, the individual turns of the latter being very close together.
