420,491. Water-tube steam boilers. JOHNSON, J., Northumbria, Golf Side, Cheam, Surrey. June 14,1934, No. 17643. [Class 123 (ii)] Steam boilers comprising a central water chamber 1 and closed - end tubes or thimbles 2 radiating therefrom have a casing 3 which circumscribes the tube tips and forms an annular space decreasing in cross-sectional area in the direction of gas flow. Instead of the inverted conical shape the water chamber may be cylindrical, the casing then tapering upwardly. A downcomer 11 may be provided in the chamber. The boiler may be heated by hot waste gases or directly fired in which case an annular space 9 may be provided to heat the combustion air.
