Abstract
438,305. Indirectly heated steam boilers and water heaters. ELDERTON, A. J., 133, Shepherds Lane, Dartford, Kent. Jan. 24, 1936, No. 2345. [Class 123 (ii)] Steam boilers or water heaters heated by direct firing and by means of hot waste gases as from internalcombustion engines, gas retorts, steel furnaces, &c. comprise a centrally disposed fuel-fired heating surface constituting, e.g. a vertical or a horizontal or Scotch boiler and another heating surface comprising thimble or looped tubes or both fitted into and forming part of the exterior shell or plates of the boiler for extracting heat from waste gases. A vertical boiler comprises a furnace C with thimble tubes L in the path of the combustion gases. A casing F receiving hot waste gases surrounds thimbles E fitted in the outer shell A and a superheater G. The casing may comprise several sections for the separate utilization of gases from various sources. A marine boiler has a casing along each side of the outer shell into which horizontally or radially arranged thimbles are fitted. The waste gas path may be increased by a baffle. Gills or fins may be fitted to some of the tubes and feedwater or air heaters may be provided.
