Abstract

250,405. Harper, S. G., and Woodward, A. July 27, 1925. Vertical boilers comprising a crowned cylindrical shell 7 containing a tapered concentric firebox 1 extended through an Adamson expansion joint 4 in the form of a submerged crowned cylindrical combustion chamber 3 of a diameter not greater than the smallest diameter of the firebox, are provided with radiating smoke tubes 9 of equal length, the flue gases passing into a circumferential or nearly circumferential smoke-box 12 and thence through an annulus 15 and over the boiler crown 8 to a chimney. The smoke tubes may vary in diameter from the top to bottom rows and may be larger in diameter at their .outer ends. They may be so arranged as to leave an inspection space. The flue gases may be led on their way to the chimney through a common duct into which feed-water or air-heating elements are introduced. Specification 4349/79 is referred to.
