Vertical boilers haying oppositely arranged pockets constituting a combustion chamber 4 and a smoke-box 5 connected by horizontal flue tubes 1 secured in plates 2 which lie within the circum. ference of the top and bottom parts of the boiler, are provided with a tapered fire-box 8, the top of which is truncated on an inclined line and carries a dome-shaped crown 11 with its axis at an angle to that of the fire-box; an independent duct element 9, mounted wholly on the crown, connects the fire-box and combustion chamber. The two plates 2, which are connected together by two vertical joints, constitute the middle part of the boiler shell, and are connected with the lower part by an inclined circumferential joint.
