Abstract
559,968. Starting. ATLANTIC DIESEL CORPORATION. Sept. 10, 1942, No. 12758. Convention date, May 21, 1941. [Class 7 (v)] Decompression valves 12, Fig. 2, on a number of engine cylinders are provided with means for effecting substantially simultaneous opening of all the valves by admitting pneumatic pressure through sets of passages 58, 24 to chambers 20 in which are pistons 21 adapted to open the valves, closing some only of the valves by releasing the pressure in the corresponding chambers 20, and then releasing the pressure in the chambers pertaining to others of the valves 12. As shown, each chamber 20 is formed in a casing 10 mounted on the cylinder head 11 and connected above the piston 21 to a tube 24. The tubes 24 are connected in groups 24a, 24b, 24c to pipes 34a, 34b, 34c to which air can be supplied through non-return valves 59 by a hand-actuated pump 41 mounted on a distributer panel 32. The pressure in each set of pipes can be released at will by a valve 71 actuated by depressing a corresponding button 33 on the panel 32. A signal lamp 38 on the panel is connected to a battery 36 through a hand switch 35 and contacts 30 on each valve piston 21, so that when the switch 35 is closed the lamp will be lighted unless all the decompression valves are open. The valves 12 may be separate decompression valves, on the stems of which the pistons 21 are mounted, or may be the engine exhaust valves, actuated by pistons 21 on push rods.
