Fourstroke - cycle engines; cylinders, ports and passages of.-A charge of air is admitted prior to the exhaust stroke through tangential ports 5, when uncovered by the piston, the ports being directed to deliver the air into and around a trough-like depression 7 in the piston. The air may be at a higher pressure than of the normal air supply through a valve 2 and one or more non- return valves 9 may be provided behind the ports 5 which may extend round the periphery of the cylinder.
