Abstract
556,297. Air compressors or pumps. BIRD, J. T. Feb. 27, 1942, No. 1997/41. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVI] In a compressor or pump having a number of pairs of opposed pistons, 1 ... 3, 7 and 8 in axial alignment, Fig. 1, with a cylinder space between each pair, gudgeons or cross-beams 11- 15 passing through stems, trunks or skirts 4-6, 9, 10 attached to the pistons and through slots E-H, J, in the cylinder wall are connected to longitudinal coupling rods 16-19 driving the crank-shaft 32 through connecting rods 24-27. The rods 16, 17 have slots 20-23 for the passage of the gudgeons 12-14. In a modification, Fig. 2, a cylinder S on each side of the crankshaft has two single pistons 7, 8 and between them a double piston 1 connected by a sleeve 4. The pistons 7, 8 have tubular gudgeons 11 passing through slots H in the cylinder walls and connected to coupling rods 16, 17 running in recesses in or flattened portions of the cylinder walls, and the sleeve 4 has a gudgeon 12 connected to coupling rods 18, 19 by sockets G<SP>1</SP> H<SP>1</SP> passing through slots 20, 21 in the rods 16, 17. The rods 18, 19 are connected to cranks 28, 29 by connecting rods 24, 26, and the rods 16, 17 are connected to central cranks 30 by a connecting-rod 25, the corresponding members on the other side of the crank shaft being connected by connecting-rods 24<SP>1</SP>-26<SP>1</SP>. The pistons have stems N screwed into sleeves O, the pistons 7 carrying liners P which bear against circular bearings Q in the cylinders. The sleeve 4 of the piston 1 may have an arcuate slipper bearing against the underside of the cylinder in a horizontal compressor. Inlet and exhaust valves C<SP>1</SP> and D<SP>1</SP> are provided in each combustion space A, B. In modifications, one pair of coupling rods runs within the other pair, or the two sets of gudgeons lie in planes at right angles, so that both pairs of rods lie close to the cylinder.
