Abstract

476,247. Converting reciprocating into rotary motion, and vice versa; cams. MARCH, C. E. M. June 5, 1936, No. 15747. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] Apparatus for converting reciprocating into rotary motion and vice versa, in internal-combustion and steam engines, pumps, &c., comprises the combination with a reciprocating member arranged to slide in or on a guide, of three similar cams coupled together so as to rotate, two of them at the same speed as, but in opposite direction to, the other and each engaging a part of or a follower on a reciprocating member, the arrangement being such that as the cams rotate, they cause reciprocation of the reciprocating member, the side thrust of one cam being balanced by that of the others. As applied to a two-stroke internal-combustion engine, three cylinders B are mounted on a casing A carrying bearings for a shaft D to which is secured a cam E of approximately triangular form. On each side of cam E is a cam F of similar form mounted on a bearing F<1> supported on a sleeve F<2> secured to the casing. Rigidly secured to the inner end of each sleeve F<2> is a spider F<3> carrying radial pins on which are mounted bevel pinions G each of which engages corresponding teeth on the cams E and F which therefore rotate in opposite directions. Each piston H has a forked inner end carrying three rollers H<1> the centre one of which engages cam E whilst the outer two engage the cams F. The number of strokes performed by the piston per shaft revolution, in this case three, may be varied by employing cams of different contour. The rollers may be maintained in contact with the cams by connecting the inner ends of adjacent pistons by a lever pivoted to the casing.. Specification 425,987, [Group XXVII], is referred to.
