Abstract

358,046. Engines. MAARSEVEEN, A. C. VAN, 25, Anna van Buerenstraat, The Hague. June 28, 1930, No. 19725. [Class 122 (iii).] In a multicylinder steam or internal-combustion engine, the pistons are connected to a cam consisting of a pair of helical grooves of different radii at the points of reversal. A piston 4 working in a cylinder 2 consists of a central portion 4 on which is mounted an external part 5 provided with a ball bearing 6. Each piston-rod carries a cam 9 on the surface of which are two intersecting grooves 10 into which rotatable pins project. The motion is transmitted to a driving-shaft 21 through drums 22 mounted on the piston-rods, the drums having pins 23 which co-operate with axial grooves in a cylinder 25 fixed to the engine shaft. The drums 22 can be uncoupled by a clutch during the working of the engine to facilitate repairs or starting. The rotational speed of the piston-rod 8 may be varied by rotating the pins which engage the cam grooves ; the pins are mounted on a ring 15 carrying a toothed wheel 17 which is driven from a shaft 19 through gearing 20, 18. The shaft 19 is driven from the engine shaft 21 through a change-speed and reversing gear.
