Abstract
555,692. Pipe couplings. GREIG, L. T. H., and EXACTOR CONTROL CO., Ltd. June 1, 1942, No. 7410. [Class 99 (i)] In a self-sealing coupling in which by disconnecting the coupling the ends of coupled pipes are closed by self-closing valves, the spigot end 3a of a union 2 engages a second union 1 and forms a seat 13 for a valve 10 which slides on a fixed pin 11. In the union 1 an annular valve 9 co-operates with a seat on a fixed member 7. Box valves are controlled by springs and the fixed members 7 and 11 are mounted on spiders 8 and 12 respectively. Passages 18 in the spider 12 may be inclined. In the connected position of the coupling the valve 10 is forced from its seat by the member 7 and the valve 9 is forced inwards away from its seat by the spigot end 3a. Packing is provided at 4, 5 and the unions are secured together by a screwed sleeve 6 or by a bayonet joint (not shown). Flanges 17 on the ends of the pipe fittings 16 bear on the spiders 8 and 12 and are secured by screwing and turning-over the ends of the unions.
