Abstract

610,652. Pipe couplings. STERLING INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and THOMAS, P. E. April 12, 1946, No. 11323. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe coupling comprises two unitary components each having a plurality of flow passages and each passage being closed by a valve which is automatically opened when the components are associated. In the form shown, the components comprise a spigot member A and a socket member B and there are two concentric flow passages in each member. The member A has its annular passage 3 terminating in a valve seat 4 formed by an inturned flange 5, the seat being engaged by a mobile valve 6 actuated by a spring 7: its central passage terminates in a similar seat 8 for a mobile valve 10. The member B has its annular passage 14 terminated by a valve seat 11 formed on a flange 16 upturned from the tubular component 13, the seat being engaged by a spring-actuated mobile valve 17 which is in sliding and sealing engagement with the socket member through a cup packing 19 : the central passage is similarly closed by a valve 24. In order to make a coupling the spigot end 5<1> is introduced into the. end 20 of the socket and the union nut 28 is tightened; the flange 15 presses on the valve 6 and opens it, and the flange 5 opens the valve 17. The spigot 9<1> of the central tubular component 2 of the member A enters the socket 13 of the member B and the valves 10, 24 are similarly opened. When the members are uncoupled, the springs press the valves into their closed positions. A branch terminated by a single self-closing valve could be fitted to any of the passages. Specification 585,038 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
