Abstract

828,964. Pipe couplings. AVINO Ltd. Jan. 9, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 24520/57. Class 99(1), In a self-sealing hose or pipe coupling of the kind comprising releasably engageable plug and socket elements provided with valves 13; 24 which are opened when the elements are connected together and which are self-closing to seal the elements when the latter are disconnected, the spring-loaded valve 13 movable in the socket 1 is formed of a single piece of reinforced resilient material of annular cup-like shape and having continuous sealing engagement with the bore 4 of the socket, the valve 13 being sealingly engaged with a spigot portion 3 of the plug 2 prior to disconnection of the coupling so as to occupy substantially the space between the valves 13, 24 until the latter have closed immediately prior to disconnection. As shown, the spring-loaded valve 24 is mounted in the bore 5 of the plug 2 and sealingly engages an internal tapered portion 20 of the spigot. The valve 13 sealingly engages a fixed cone-headed valve 6 housed in the socket 1. On connection, the spigot 3 displaces the valve 13 whilst the valve 6 moves the valve 24 rearwardly so that flow connection is established between the plug 2 and socket 1. The various parts of the coupling are made of non-ferrous materials, rustless steel, nylon or polytetrafluoroethylene.
