Abstract
657,381. Pipe couplings. HODGES RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Feb. 18, 1949, No. 4469. Convention date, April 5, 1948. [Class 99(i)] Male and female elements 10, 11 of pipes 20, 35 have valve seats 17, 31 engaged by valves 25, 39 that are biassed to their closing positions by resilient means, such as springs 26, 40 and have means, such as a pin 41, adapted to coact to open the valves when the elements are in coupled position, and a resilient diaphragm 44, which is located in element 11 and has a normally closed aperture 45<SP>1</SP>, prevents leakage of fluid during coupling and uncoupling of the elements. The aperture is expanded by element 10 so that the aperture sides slide over and grip the element. Spring 40 may be weaker than spring 26 to ensure that valve 39 opens before valve 25;- also spring 40 may be fully compressed before pin 41 opens valve 25. The elements may be locked in the coupled position by providing a flange 27 and an extension 42 which have interrupted screw-threads engaged together by a partial turn of the elements relative one to the other.
