Abstract

1,118,721. Pipe couplings. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. and AVERY-HARDOLL Ltd. 17 Dec., 1964 [19 Dec., 1963], No. 24377/63. Heading F2G. A coupling part 8, provided with a valve 1, and a mating coupling part are adapted to provide a fluid connection between them when brought together in use, the connection being partly provided by a passage 3 in the valve which allows fluid to flow from the part 8 to the mating part when the fluid pressure in the latter is less than a datum pressure in the part 8. Inter-engagement, e.g. by a bayonet connection, of the two parts causes the valve to be moved from the closed to the open position thereof, the energy for such movement being provided by the pressure of the fluid in the part 8, and the direction of such movement being the same as that of the fluid flow through the part 8 when the valve is fully open. The passage 3 is formed in a slide movable in the valve stem 5, the flow of fluid in the passage being controlled by an auxiliary valve 4 and the passage extending into a space above a pilot piston 11 held in permanent contact with the valve by a datum spring 73 whose compression is adjustable by an adjuster 16. The valve stem 5 is mounted coaxially through a housing 12 in which moves a piston 7 to form a chamber 9. When the coupling parts are engaged the valve 4 is depressed so that pressure fluid is bled from the chamber 9 through ports 17, 19 and passage 3 to the mating coupling part and the valve 1 is opened by the line pressure exerted in the surface 23 of piston 7. The valve remains open so long as the pressure at the face of the mating coupling part remains less than the datum setting; if that pressure should rise, spring 73 causes slide 10 to move so that chamber 9 is connected to the line pressure space via: ports 14, an annular space 13, and ports 15 so that fluid flows back to chamber 9, when the piston 7 moves back and the valve closes. If fluid flowing through the coupling is stopped, e.g. by a valve externally of the coupling, full closure of the valve 1 occurs. There is provided an interlocking pin and cam means, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) which prevent uncoupling of the parts while the valve is open.
