Abstract

548,457. Controlling fuel-injection pumps. STANLEY, G. L. April 8, 1941, No. 4700. [Class 102 (i)] In a multi-plunger fuel-injection pump for internal combustion engines in which delivery is adjusted by simultaneously rotating the pump plungers relative to their barrels by means of a master-rod, and in which each plunger is rotatably adjusted independently of the others by means of separate sliding pieces which are individually adjustable along the master-rod, a sleeve 17 is disposed between each sliding piece 14 and the master-rod 19 and is in screw-threaded engagement with one of these parts and engages the other part for common translatory movement, so that each sleeve can be rotated individually to displace its co-acting sliding piece along the rod at will. Rotation of the sliding pieces is prevented by pairs of ears 15 engaging in grooves 16 in the pump casing 11. In the form shown, the sleeves 17 are screw-threaded on to the rod 19 and adjacent ends of each pair are slotted or castellated at 26 for separate rotation by a tool inserted through cover plates. Axial movement of the sleeves relative to the sliding pieces is prevented by circlips 18 sprung into grooves in the two parts, and accidental rotation of the sleeves within the sliding pieces is prevented by means of spring-pressed plungers 31 arranged longitudinally in the sliding pieces and having pointed ends to engage the chamfered ends of radial detents 30 which engage in V-shaped serrations 29 in the sleeves. The pump plungers may be connected to their operating cross-heads by means of breaking sleeves the webs of which break under excessive load.
