Abstract

547,829. Air-raid shelters. PENFOLD FENCING, Ltd., and McKELVIE, G. March 11, 1941, No. 3336. [Class 20 (i)] An indoor air-raid shelter is built in the form of a hollow triangular prism, resting on one of its sides with an arched top, and comprises a framework of metal members covered by mesh work or like openwork metal or partly with meshwork and partly with plate, one of the panels being formed as a hinged door. In one form as shown in Fig. 1, the triangular-shaped end-frames 5, 6 are interconnected by longitudinals 7, 8, the upper longitudinals 7 carrying an arched top 9 and having hinged thereto the side panels 10 which may be opened out to form an extension of the roof protection. Collapsable frames 12 adapted to be supported by feet 15 can be used as beds and are normally carried inside the shelter, which is supported on castors 17. In a modification as shown in Fig. 3, the sides and ends are formed of separate panels joined together and one at least of the side panels 23 is formed as a door hinged along one of its side edges. Plates 24 replace the meshwork at the upper portions of the side and door panels. The upper panel 25 of the end panels may also be hinged to provide an entrance or exit.
