Abstract
537,210. Stop valves. TAYLOR, W. B. Aug. 30, 1940, No. 13633. [Class 135] A stop valve for compressed air, steam &c. is constructed so that, if the valve PV closes on its seat S after it has been opened by unscrewing the spindle VS; the valve cannot be opened again until the spindle is screwed down so that its conical end engages a hole H3 in the top of the valve. The valve PV is formed as a hollow cylinder with a mitred bottom M to fit the seat S. The valve is pressed on its seat by a spring F<SP>1</SP> in its closed position and is formed so that its head is a sliding fit in the valve body D<SP>1</SP>, and its stem slides in the part D<SP>2</SP> of the valve body. If fluid pressure acts in the pipe A<SP>1</SP> and the screw VS is screwed outwards the fluid pressure on the valve causes its head to follow up the spindle and the valve remains open while the pressure persists in the pipe A<SP>1</SP>. If this pressure falls the spring F<SP>1</SP> depresses the valve head and opens the valve connection between the aperture H<SP>3</SP> and the pointed end of the screw VS. The valve PV is then depressed on to its seat by the spring F<SP>1</SP>, or by its weight, and any increase in fluid pressure cannot open the valve until the spindle VS i again lowered to close on the aperture H<SP>3</SP>. I the pressure in the pipe A<SP>1</SP> rises before the valve is opened, the fluid can pass into a chamber F<SP>2</SP> via passages H<SP>4</SP>, H<SP>5</SP> but when the spindle is lowered to permit opening of the valve the chamber F is vented by ports H<SP>2</SP>, H<SP>1</SP> thus relieving pressure on the head of the valve.
