Abstract

7229. Rotherham, H., and Johnson, W. March 25. Piston valves; actuating.-A piston valve of the split or divided type is expanded to close the supply and discharge openings by means of two oppositely-disposed coned parts 0 on the valve spindle engaging internal coned parts of the valve. From the open position shown, the valve is screwed down by the usual screw R until the lower coned part 0 rests on the casing at S whereupon further movement of the spindle, by means of the screwed pin P causes the upper coned part O to approach the lower one and expand the valve to fit the casing tightly. A reverse action takes place prior to the opening of the valve. The device for expanding the valve is applicable also to a similar valve opened and closed by a direct pull and push.
