Abstract

111,437. Bence, E. H. June 7, 1917. Stop vaioes; closure members. -A penstock or sluice valve has a valve member adapted to be moved first parallel to its seat and afterwards turned away at right-angles. In the form shown in the Fig., the valve member 4 is hinged by lugs 5 to a screwed actuating spindle 7 which passes through a boss 8 on the casing and is engaged by a hand-wheel 9. The initial movement of the screw slides the valve member upwards to disengage the wedges 12 and slightly open the valve, while a continued movement brings cams 10 on the valve member into contact with abutments 11 to turn the member away from its seat. The cams on the valve may be replaced by pins working in fixed cam grooves. The wedges 12 may be dispensed with, and means other than a screw may be used to actuate the valve.
