Abstract

531,075. Fuel-injection engines. SANDERS,- A. F., and FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J. May 25, 1939, No. 15519. [Class 7 (iii)] A fuel-injectior chamber 11 in the cylinder head communicates at top dead-centre with another chamber 12 formed wholly in the cylinder as shown or wholly in the piston, or partly in both, the chamber 11 overhanging the chamber 12 at 16 so as to form an acute-angled edge to the port 18, this port being of less crosssection than the mean cross-section of the chamber 11, while the area of the port 18 overlying the cavity 12 is of less cross-section than the mean cross-section of the cavity 12. The fuel injector is shown at 13, and an igniter may be placed at 14. The chamber 11 is preferably of truncated spherical form, while the chamber 12 as shown in Fig. 1 is of crescent form, but may be completely cylindrical when partly or wholly in the piston. The volume of the chamber 12 may be between 0.33 and 0.125 of the total compression space, and its mean depth may be between 1/12 and “ of the stroke. The area of the port 18 bears a ratio to the mean crosssection of the chamber 11 between 0.64 and 0.25. Specification 440,046 is referred to.
